Graphics for a Restaurant

Graphic Design + Sketching + Remote Collaboration

About the Project:

A  restaurant owner and asked me to consult on some graphic designs for the logo for his new place. Goal is to create new restaurant branding for owner based on his vision. Concepts would be placed throughout the restaurant including window signage, menu design and stage backdrop for some live music.

My Role:

In charge of creating new restaurant branding for owner based on his vision for a new place. I started with some inspiration images, then started sketching, then doing graphic mock ups playing with typography and font layouts.

Collecting Inspiration Images + Sketching

Playing with the concepts of 'Tap & Table' as well as various 'crossroads' options. Inspired by nature and natural materials such as wood , bricks, maps of the area, and navigational signs.

Tablet Sketching

After collecting inspiration images, and a rough sketch from the owner, I was intrigued by the aerial map of the surrounding town near the restaurant. I used my tablet to freehand sketch over area maps (top two sketches below). I met with the owner to be sure I was going in a direction he was pleased with. And he loved the map overlay concept.

He also mentioned he needed a logo that still represented the restaurant but could be used as a backdrop for a stage. He wanted to be sure it was still encompassing to the tap and table theme (bottom two sketches below). Using the natural wood grain as inspiration I choose a whiskey barrel with a dinner plate setting as if were setting the 'table' on the 'tap'.

Choosing Typography

Choosing the perfect typography for a logo, there are a lot of considerations to think about. How it is going to look on a sign outside the restaurant. How its going to look on the menu or on a small business card. The owner sent me a font style that he liked and I found some similar options that I proposed.

Where we are today

Final designs were chosen and the owner was very pleased with the outcome. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen issues, the restaurant build is put on hold indefinitely. Hopefully there will me more coming soon.
